Curriculum Corner — Five in a Row

Exploring Curriculum is a series covering the core academic subjects for grades TK-8. Here are some of the past subjects covered:

Five in a Row is an amazing literature-based program that focuses on one quality book per week. Just as the title suggests, families read the same book for five days in a row. That way, children become familiar with the story and can explore the content beyond the pages in the book. The guides offer a collection of lesson extensions that parents can choose from that best fit the learning goals and child’s interests. The lesson suggestions include social studies, science, math, fine arts and language arts topics. In the Explore Books section of this Monday Message, The Story About Ping is an example of one of the picture books contained in Five in a Row Volume 1.

Five in a Row is recommended for grades TK-2, and the guides and book collections can be purchased at Rainbow Resource. Beyond Five in a Row focuses on chapter books and biographies for grades 2-5, and the guides and book collections could also be purchased at Rainbow Resource or checked out at your local library. Please note: Content that is sectarian, such as “Five in a Row Volume 4” or “Before Five in a Row,” may not be purchased with instruction funds.
